Serving someone in another country takes more than a plane ticket. We prepare and manage service abroad under the Hague Service Convention, the Inter-American Convention and letters rogatory, and arrange informal service where the destination country allows it.

We also serve papers in Los Angeles and throughout California for cases pending in foreign courts, returning proof in the form your court requires.

What is international service of process?

International service of process is the delivery of legal documents to a person or company outside the United States in a way that both the U.S. court and the destination country will accept.

The right method depends on the country. Treaty countries generally expect requests through their Central Authority, often with translations, while others may require letters rogatory through diplomatic channels. Using the wrong method can make a judgment hard to enforce abroad.

Frequently asked questions

How long does international service take?

It depends on the country and method. Some countries complete service in weeks; Central Authority requests can take several months. We give an estimate up front.

Many countries require translation into the official language. We arrange certified translations when needed.

What is the Hague Service Convention?

The Hague Service Convention is a treaty that sets a standard way to serve legal documents between member countries, usually through each country’s Central Authority. More than 80 countries are parties to it.

What are letters rogatory?

Letters rogatory are a formal request from a U.S. court to a foreign court asking it to serve documents or take evidence. They are used when a country is not part of a service treaty and usually take longer.

What do I need to start international service?

The documents to be served, the person’s name and address abroad, the country, and any translation the country requires. Send these through the service request form and we’ll advise on the correct method and timeline.

Is service abroad valid in California courts?

Service made in compliance with the Hague Convention, or another valid method allowed by California law and the destination country’s rules, is generally accepted. We choose the method to match your case and provide the required proof.
