How California service works

California law sets out the methods for serving a summons. We advise on — and document — the method that fits your case:

  • Personal service — delivered directly to the person (CCP §415.10).
  • Substituted service — left with a competent adult at home or business after diligent attempts, followed by mailing (CCP §415.20).
  • Notice & acknowledgment — by mail with a return form (CCP §415.30).
  • Service by publication — when a court order allows it (CCP §415.50). See our Publications page.

Frequently asked questions

Do you serve outside Los Angeles County?

Yes. We serve in every California county through our network of registered process servers, coordinated and quality-checked by our LA office.

How is pricing set outside LA County?

We quote every job based on location and turnaround before any work begins, in LA County and statewide.

Who signs the proof of service?

The process server who completed the service signs the proof of service, ready for you to file.

Where are the California county courthouses?

Each of California’s 58 counties has its own Superior Court, and many have several courthouses. Our county pages list the main courthouse for each county, and your case’s assigned courthouse is shown on the filed complaint or notice of case assignment.

Who can serve court papers in California?

Any adult (18 or older) who is not a party to the case may serve a summons and complaint (Code of Civil Procedure § 414.10). Most people hire a registered process server so the service is documented and the proof of service is accurate.

How long does it take to serve papers elsewhere in California?

Standard service typically takes 3–5 days and rush service 24–48 hours. Remote counties can take longer, and we confirm timing with your quote.
